To say I love “Avatar: The Last Airbender” would be an understatement. I don’t just love this show. It is my favorite show of all time. Don’t let it’s animated style hinder you to think it is only my favorite among animated shows. “Avatar” is my favorite show, period.
The show was on TV when I was a teenager. I had grown up with cartoons such as “Rugrats”, “Wild Thornberry’s”, and “Spongebob”. “Avatar” was stupid anime to my ignorant brain. It was just last year when I finally sat down to watch the show and I was immediately hooked. As I made my way through every episode, I began to see entertainment a bit differently. Growing up, my world was very limited to the types of stories I was exposed to. High school and college helped to widen my horizon but I still needed a push. “Avatar” features stories with characters of all different types of ethnicities, tackles big issues like spirituality and asking if violence is the answer, and actually creates characters with their own individual motives and arcs that carry on from episode to episode. Never have I seen a show that was so well crafted…and makes “adult shows” laughable (“Grey’s Anatomy” anyone?).
A few months ago I decided to rewatch the first episode out of boredom and was amazed at how good it was. I mean, not that I didn’t know it was amazing but I had forgotten the feeling of watching “Avatar.” It was like returning to an old home or reuniting with a long-unseen friend. As I worked my way through Book 1 a second time, I immediately started picking up on deeper meanings in the show. Engrossed, it seemed appropriate to write all of my thoughts down and put them in a blog. The typical thing to do, right?
The Secret Tunnel blog is named after one of the most iconic songs from the “Avatar” saga, sung by the hippies in the beginning of Book 2. While the title captures the humor the show presents, it also works on another level. When you read these posts I hope that you too are entering a literal secret tunnel where hidden treasures lie. I want to look at this awesome show a bit deeper and hopefully, we will come out on the other side more knowledgeable and excited about creativity! It isn’t often you are given a show this good. Naturally, it makes sense to want to explore it’s hidden caverns a bit more.
So join me, and let’s begin our journey through the SECRET TUNNEL! SECRET TUNNEL! THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS! SECRET, SECRET, SECRET, SECRET TUNNEL!
